So, what exactly does it mean to “Live life on your own terms?” Many people believe they’re already doing it – those times when they show up at work at 10 o’clock instead of 9 o’clock, or when they spend their money on the newest handbag (because I work hard every day and should be able to get what I want), when they really need to pay the cable bill. Those actions don’t mean you’re living life on your own terms, it simply means you’re making bad decisions. Truth be told, many people live their lives under the requirements, expectations, and limitations of other people, and don’t even know it. They’ve become so far removed from their own opinions, thoughts, actions, and dreams they don’t realize they’re not really living life; they’re simply existing. There are several reasons why this can happen:
- They’ve never thought about making a different life for themselves
- They’re afraid of the negative comments or push back from family or friends
- They’re not confident in their own ability to make a new/better life happen for themselves
The reality is, this is YOUR life, and as far as we know, we only get one. You may have heard the saying Y.O.L.O (You Only Live Once), so plan to take full advantage of it. To truly live on your own terms, you have to stand up for your personal values and character, and not allow anyone else to dictate what that means for you. But, above all else, you MUST have the confidence and belief that it’s possible.
I found the following “Manifesto” and thought it was important to share it with you – [i]
